The Clematis needed another heavy prune. The photo above was on the 1st June and the one below on the 22nd. It's amazing how it recovers so well.
And now, six weeks later the new growth has gone mad.
This is not the first time it has had a major prune. I noted such on the 2nd April 2010 and then on 29th July 2017 I included similar photos.
