The Farewell, Ad Astra and Ready or Not

A perfect chinese film follows a family returning to their homeland from the USA for a wedding. Awkwafina is superb as the daughter caught up in a drama that particularly involves her grandmother, an even better Zhao Shuzhen. It will take something for her not to get a best supporting award. The story and the dialogue are both excellent and director Lulu Wang has woven together a remarkably emotional movie. First class.

The one word I would use to describe Ad Astra is impressive. Unfortunately, as in so many movie set in outer space, the visuals outweigh the story. But what visuals. James Gray has perfected  the cutting edge CGI and they do keep us interested to a degree. But the story is straight from Apocalypse Now, just  swapping space for that river in Vietnam. Brad Pitt is his moody self as he sets off on that mission. His narration? Well you've guessed where that comes from.

Ready Or Not is a superior comedy/horror/revenge movie. Grace (played by a competent Samara Weaving) is surprised on her wedding night when her new rich family insist on her choosing a game. This turns out to be hide and seek but with deadly intent. There are plenty of twists and turns to supplement a predictable plot. There are moments of gratuitous violence that spoil the action, but on the whole the directors keep it light hearted.
