One of the things Karen and Richard wanted to see, when they were over here for a holiday, was a Premier League football match. When Karen found the tickets, she kindly invited Alison and I to join them at Wembley for the biggest match of the season so far: Spurs at home to Liverpool.
We drove to Amersham and took the Metropolitan line to Wembley Park. We had never used our credit cards as contactless payment through the London Underground turnstiles before, but it all worked fine! I cannot remember having used Wembley Park Station at any of my previous journeys to the Stadium or Arena, so I was not prepared for the huge crowds descending the steps and making their way down Wembley Way. We found Richard and Karen and joined the sell-out 80,000 inside the ground.
We had only been to the new Wembley once before and that was many years ago. We had a great view of the game, the high seats give an amazing perspective on the tactics. Spurs hardly ever penetrated the Liverpool midfield and defence. I cannot remember their goalkeeper having to make a save. Spurs were well below their best, giving the ball away far too often. From a slack backheader, the resulting corner brought the first Liverpool goal. So when they scored a second, it was only what they deserved after having numerous opportunities to double their lead. The late Spurs goal was only a consolation.
It was only two stops to Baker Street where I had booked a late lunch at Bill's.
It was late afternoon when we said goodbye to Karen and Richard, and thanked them for a wonderful day.
