What's happened to the Hypericum?

This was the Hypericum last year, a large yellow flowering shrub that has only been pruned once in the possibly fifteen years since it was planted. Time for another prune.

The general advice is to prune down to about 12 inches above the ground, it only flowers on new growth. This meant a major exercise with my new Jardin De France ratchet system secateurs (a welcome Christmas present). I found lots of dead stalks and all sorts of rubbish over the crown. And, thankfully some new shoots.

It has made the bed seem so much bigger now it is not filled by the whole plant. I might even be able to plant some bedding around in the summer. Already a few tulips that I stuck in the ground, after being in pots, are beginning to flower.
